Melton Byakkokan Aikido was founded in 2012 by Mike Diette Sensei (Sandan - 3rd Dan) to provide a safe and welcoming environment conducive to learning the traditional self defence art of Yoshinkan Aikido.
Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed in the late 1920’s and is derived from the traditional art of jujitsu (specifically Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu) and specialises in throwing an attacker and controlling using joint locking, as such it forms a very effective self defence.
We are an official Yoshinkan (AYF) dojo registered under the name Byakkokan, meaning ‘House of the White Tiger’. We are the only AYF registered club in Leicestershire and offer true Yoshinkan Aikido.
To learn more about the Yoshinkan, the best selling book ‘Angry White Pyjamas’ is a recommended read.
Aikido works through the application of technique rather than strength and so can be practised by anyone regardless of age, gender, size or physical ability.
While being an effective method of self defence, Aikido provides a great way for you to get fit, build confidence and make new friends. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience and we do like to make it fun.
We cover both general physical fitness and body conditioning to enable us to perform our techniques, which first start off by learning how to fall safely or roll correctly.
We also use the traditional Japanese terminology, but that shouldn’t put you off as it’s easy to grasp. It’s also a great language to speak and adds another dimension to your development and learning experience.
